Bennett was leaving for college in September. One day in mid-August, Leila told him she was moving to New York. She wanted to try out for off-Broadway shows. She would send him her address and telephone number as soon as she got there. He was happy about this sudden announcement. He was going to college in the Northeast, and New York would be nearer than Memphis.
A few days later, when he went to visit her, the apartment was empty. No one knew where Leila had gone.
Many times over the following few years he called information in New York to find her, but she wasn’t listed. Twice he went there himself to inquire at the off-Broadway houses. She wasn’t there. Years later, he often wondered why the love of a seventeen-year-old kid should have meant anything to her.
